Xnet VFX FAQs
Xnet Virtual Fone Xchange (VFX) is a low cost, feature rich, easy to use telephone service that gives anyone with a Broadband Internet connection access to the WorldxChange Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) network.
Q. Can I get this service now?
A. Yes! You can sign-up right now.
Q. Do I have to talk to my service provider?
A. Generally no. The service works over most DSL connections, and over your standard telephone line. Xnet VFX is an additional service that allows you to access lower cost rates and a higher feature set. This can be done with WorldxChange directly and does not involve other suppliers that may be involved.
It is advisable to call and cancel any duplicate services, such as call waiting, as you get these types of features free with your Xnet VFX service, and should not have to pay for it twice.
In most cases you should also select the lowest cost telephone line rental. Most customers are unaware that a lower cost option is available.
Q. Do I need to buy extra hardware?
A. WorldxChange has partnered with Linksys, one of the biggest manufacturers of networking equipment in the world. Please have a look at our Hardware Section for more details.
If your current modem/router is older than 3 years: please confirm with your hardware manufacturer that it is IP (VoIP/SIP) compatible. Examples of non-vfx compatible devices include:
- Dynalink RTA020
- Dynalink RTA210
- Dynalink RTA220
- Dynalink RTA300
- Dynalink RTA300W
You may wish to update your equipment to take advantage of ADSL2+ technology as your local exchange gets upgraded.
Q. Is VFX available in my area?
A. Xnet VFX is available nationwide and simply requires a high speed Internet connection & Xnet approved, VoIP enabled hardware. Please check out our Availability Table to see if local numbers can be assigned in your area. If you are outside of the VFX enabled local calling areas, you can still sign up for the service for use as a low cost outbound tolls alternative. You will be issued a phone number from your general region, but you will not want people within your normal free calling area to call you on that number as they will likely incur a toll charge from their service provider. WorldxChange currently cover 18 of the 24 local calling areas and will continue to grow the coverage over time.
Q. Can I get rid of my Line Rental?
A. Yes, you can now drop your normal analogue line and use WxC's Xnet Fusion service. Click here for more information. .
Q. Can I keep my existing phone number when transferring to the VFX service?
A. It is easy to transfer your number across to your new VFX service. This means you don't need to tell friends and family, businesses, etc about a change in number. There is a one off fee or $19.69 for each number transferred. There are some conditions and restrictions on this service, for more information please call us on 0800 123 456.
Q. How do people call me?
A. You will be issued with a new WorldxChange number which both New Zealand and international callers can contact you on. These calls will be treated in the normal way - for instance if you are issued with an Auckland number, a call from Auckland will be treated as local, etc.
Q. Can I still make free local calls?
A. Yes. Calls to local numbers are still free. Note they will now go through WorldxChange.
Q. Can I add a second phone line?
A. You can add a second phone line for only $7.95 per month. The line is fully featured, including voicemail, comes with it’s own publishable phone number and makes calls at the same low cost calling rates.
Please note if you are looking for more than 2 lines, you may be treated as a commercial customer and different charges, including local calling rates may apply. Contact WorldxChange for more information.
Q. Can I call 0900 number from my VFX service?
A. Yes. You will be charged at the rate advised by the 0900 host.
Q. Can I use my Fax over VFX?
A. Yes, most Faxes are supported: however if you experience any issues please call our support team on 0800 14 XNET (9638). WxC does not guarantee that all facsimile equipment will work over the Xnet network.
WorldxChange is now offering a Fax to Email service, for more information please click here.
Q. Can i restrict my outbound calls?
A. Yes. WxC offers a tollbar service where users can choose to block outbound calls to National, International, Mobile and 0900 numbers. These can be subscribed to for a monthy fee of $5 or $15 for the full tollbar. To apply a tollbar to your VFX service call us on 0800 123 456.
Q. What happens if there is a power cut? What happens if the Internet goes down?
A. The VFX line requires both power (for your router and PC to work for a start) and the Internet to work successfully.
Q. Do I need WorldxChange's Broadband to connect?
A. VFX will operate with any broadband connection. You should also note that calls through other broadband providers will affect your data caps, whereas if you choose to use an Xnet HSI plan, VFX calls are not counted towards your data allowance.
Q. Do the calls require a certain size broadband connection?
A. No. All active broadband connections in New Zealand have enough bandwidth to support a call.
Q. Do calls affect my data allowance?
A. Normally yes. The telephone call is treated like any other national Internet traffic. If you are an Xnet HSI user, traffic generated by your VFX calls are not counted towards your data allowance. Another reason why Xnet HSI is the DSL service provider for you!
Q. What happens to my calls if my DSL connection is throttled back?
A. Being throttled back should not affect the quality of your call. Xnet VFX requires less than half of the 64Kbps throttled speed. The Linksys equipment that we endorse provides for Quality of Service (QoS) so the phone call takes priority over any data you are sending or receiving. Other manufactures equipment may not facilitate QoS which means that if you download a large file while making a call when your DSL line speed has been throttled, there is the potential that it may degrade the audio quality of your conversation.
Q. Can I forward my other number? What are the costs involved?
A. Yes. You can point your existing number to the new phone system. The charge will depend on your current line rental provider and will appear on their bill.
